A 550 W module is the volume default for commercial rooftops and carports. It sits at the point where the wattage is high enough to cut the number of rails, clamps and labour hours per kilowatt, while the panel is still a size two installers can carry on a roof without a lifting frame.

This page covers the module as supplied: the electrical numbers that decide the string configuration, the mechanical numbers that decide whether it fits your roof, and what has to be confirmed before it ships. It is written for installers, EPCs and procurement teams turning a layout into a purchase order.

The numbers that decide the string configuration

Three electrical values matter more than the headline wattage, and all three are on the datasheet rather than in the marketing.

  • Open-circuit voltage sets how many modules you can put in series. It rises as temperature falls, so the string length is calculated at the coldest expected temperature for the site, not at the 25 degrees of the datasheet.
  • Current compatibility requires separate checks of operating current and maximum permissible short-circuit current at each inverter input. String protection is selected from the module, cable and equipment ratings under the applicable design rules.
  • Temperature coefficient of Pmax decides what the module delivers on a hot roof. Around -0.29 percent per degree Celsius is the range to specify; the difference between a strong and a weak coefficient is worth more on a dark roof than a fraction of a percent of nameplate efficiency.

What arrives in a typical order

  • Modules palletised and stretch-wrapped with corner protection, stacked to a count your site can unload.
  • Flash-test records linked to the supplied serial numbers, with file availability confirmed in the order.
  • Available batch electroluminescence inspection records, with the requested file scope confirmed in the order.
  • Datasheet, mechanical drawing and the certification file for your destination market.
  • Packing list and delivery documentation.

Where a 550 W module usually goes

  • Commercial rooftops where area is the constraint and watts per square metre decides the yield.
  • Carports and canopies where the layout is regular and the module count drives the steel.
  • Ground-mount blocks where fewer piles and fewer clamps reduce the balance-of-system cost.
  • Extensions to existing arrays where the rail layout is already fixed and the replacement has to match it.

Sizing notes before you order

  • Check the module width against your rail layout and clamp position. A higher wattage that does not fit the rails is not an upgrade.
  • Confirm the weight per module against the roof structure and against what the crew can carry safely.
  • Check operating-current and short-circuit-current limits separately for each MPPT and input, including parallel strings. Confirm cable and protection ratings using the inverter manual and applicable design rules.
  • Ask for positive-only power tolerance if you are modelling output from nameplate rather than from a bin average.

Packaging, minimum order and delivery

  • Minimum order: from one pallet, typically 31 to 36 modules, for stocked wattages.
  • Packaging: palletised and stretch-wrapped with corner protection; we palletise mixed wattages by roof block or by building when you ask.
  • Delivery: U.S. domestic freight to your site or yard, from U.S. warehouse inventory with dispatch timing confirmed for the selected model and delivery address for stocked specifications.

Documentation to confirm for your order

  • Module datasheet and mechanical drawing.
  • Applicable module qualification and safety test documents for the selected model, with destination-market listings or certificates confirmed before ordering.
  • Flash-test and batch electroluminescence records for the supplied modules, as agreed in the document schedule.
  • Packing list, commercial invoice and delivery documentation.

Questions buyers ask

550 W or 600 W?

Compare the actual module dimensions, efficiency, weight and approved mounting positions. A 600 W rating gives more watts per module, but does not necessarily give more watts per square metre than a 550 W model. Evaluate roof fit and installed cost using the selected datasheets.

Can I mix wattages in one order?

Yes. Stocked wattages can be combined on the same delivery, and we palletise the mix so it arrives ready to unload by roof block or by building rather than as one undifferentiated stack.

Which certifications come with the modules?

Confirm the applicable qualification, safety and destination-market documents for the exact module model. Where a UL or ETL listing is required, verify that it covers the supplied model; laboratory names alone do not establish market approval.

How many modules fit on a pallet?

Typically 31 to 36 depending on the wattage and the frame height. The exact count is on the quotation, and it matters for planning how many pallets your site can receive and where they will sit.

What does the power tolerance mean?

It is the range around the nameplate wattage a module can be delivered at. A positive-only tolerance means every module meets or exceeds the nameplate figure, which matters when the array output is modelled from nameplate rather than from a bin average.

What to send us

Send the roof or land area, the inverter model you are using, and the quantity and target date. We confirm the string configuration against your inverter before you order, so the modules arrive matched to the electrical design rather than close to it.
