A 1 MWh battery container is the step up taken when a single cabinet stops making sense. It suits commercial and industrial sites with real demand-charge exposure, projects pairing storage with a solar array of a megawatt or more, microgrids, and utility-side work where the constraint is land and interconnection rather than floor space.
This page covers the container as supplied: what is inside it, what the ratings mean, what the site has to provide, and what has to be settled before it ships.
What is inside the container
- Battery racks with LFP packs and the rack-level management units.
- Power conversion system, typically 250 to 500 kW, or sized to the C-rate you specify.
- Thermal management: air conditioning sized to the ambient range of the site.
- Fire detection and mitigation equipment as specified for the selected system and approved installation.
- Internal distribution, protection, earthing and the container management controller.
- Lighting, access control and emergency egress to the standard your authority applies.
The step-up transformer, the medium-voltage switchgear and the site controller are quoted on the same order when the project needs them, so the impedance, the fault rating and the protection settings are settled together rather than by three separate suppliers.

Where a 1 MWh container fits
- Peak shaving and demand-charge management at larger commercial and industrial facilities.
- Solar-plus-storage, smoothing output and shifting generation into the evening peak.
- Microgrids and islanded sites, where the container carries the load for hours at a time.
- Backup power where the requirement is measured in hours across a large load rather than a few circuits.
- Grid support services where the local market allows them.
What the site has to provide
- A level, load-bearing foundation or pad, built to the drawing we issue with the order.
- Crane or heavy-capacity handling for offloading, and an approach route that takes the delivery vehicle.
- Separation distances and access that satisfy the fire review.
- An interconnection point with the capacity the power rating needs.
- Drainage, and in hot climates consideration of shade or ventilation around the container.
Sizing notes before you order
- Model the bill before you model the battery: the peak window, the demand ratchet and the export rate decide the payback more than the capacity does.
- Settle AC-coupled or DC-coupled early. It changes the inverter choice and the efficiency, and it is expensive to change after the electrical design is frozen.
- Size any step-up transformer from the maximum PCS charge/discharge apparent power, reactive-power duty, connection voltage and operating conditions, together with the network design. Battery energy capacity alone does not determine transformer kVA.
- Put the fire-code path on the critical path from day one: separation, detection, egress and the review calendar of your authority.
- Plan the commissioning window. Grid protection settings and any witness test are usually the last items and the easiest to underestimate.
Packaging, minimum order and delivery
- Minimum order: one container.
- Packaging: shipped complete and sea-fastened where it comes from overseas.
- Offloading: crane or heavy-capacity handling; confirm ground bearing on the route and at the pad.
- Delivery: to your site or yard in the U.S. Stocked configurations ship from U.S. warehouse inventory with dispatch timing confirmed for the selected model and delivery address; project configurations are quoted with a firm date.
Documentation to confirm for your order
- Where required for the selected system, confirm the applicable UL 9540 listing and available UL 9540A test data, including the configuration and installation conditions covered.
- Confirm transport test documentation for the supplied battery and applicable battery or system safety reports for the destination market.
- Clearance drawings, separation distances and the anchorage calculation for your wind and seismic region.
- Single-line diagram, foundation drawing and the protection settings.
- Commissioning checklist, operation and maintenance manual, and warranty terms.
Questions buyers ask
A 100 kWh cabinet or a 1 MWh container?
It comes down to the peak you are covering and how long it lasts. Below roughly 100 kW of peak and a couple of hours of coverage, a cabinet is usually the better value. Above that, or where the site already has land and interconnection, a container costs less per kWh.
AC-coupled or DC-coupled?
AC coupling can simplify some retrofits, while DC coupling can change the conversion path and equipment arrangement. Compare efficiency, controls, backup capability and cost for the actual solar and storage design rather than assuming one architecture is always better.
Do we need a step-up transformer?
Where the storage connects to a medium-voltage network, confirm the voltage-conversion arrangement. Size the transformer from the maximum PCS charge/discharge apparent power, reactive duty, loading profile and network requirements; battery kWh alone does not establish kVA.
How long does the authority review take?
It varies by jurisdiction and it is the most common cause of slipped dates. A complete submittal shortens it: listing, UL 9540A report, clearance drawings, foundation and anchorage calculation, and the commissioning checklist the inspector works through.
What has to be ready before delivery?
The pad or foundation, the offloading access, and the separation distances agreed with the authority. Confirming those three before the truck is booked is what prevents a container arriving to a site that cannot receive it.
What to send us
Send the site address, the interconnection voltage, the peak you want to cover and how long it must be covered for, plus your target schedule. We come back with the configuration, the power conversion rating, the transformer requirement if there is one, and a firm date.
